We Have a Dream

Today marks the 51st anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech – it was a speech about civil rights, a speech about freedom, a speech about being recognized.

Although it may seem a bit of a stretch, while reading the excerpt of his speech, certain sentences stuck out to me, and gave me a little more encouragement as the Keep Taiwan Free Rally day approaches.

“We cannot walk alone. And as we walk we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back.”

“I say to you today, my friends, though, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.”

“Now is the time to real the promises of democracy.”

Many times throughout this planning process for the Keep Taiwan Free movement, we have all been asked what we can do here in the US to help Taiwan. Let’s not forget that we are in a country where we can make noise, where we can say what we think, where we are free to share what things matter to us, where we can go tell anyone and everyone – whether it be a congressmember, or just a friend – what you think matters.

We can voice our opinions about Taiwan, and at the same time, hopefully also empower the individuals in Taiwan to speak up for their own country.

We can face the difficulties of today and tomorrow together, and strive to let freedom ring….
all because we have this dream.

Let’s keep Taiwan free.
